Projects > Global Warming, Sustainable Transportation, and Carbon Offsetting
Since Al Gore's recent attention to the problems of global warming in "An Inconvenient Truth," citizens and tourists have been paying more attention to the effects of their vacations. Long-haul trips to far-away lands require substantial energy expenditures and release considerable pollution into the atmosphere. By adhering to the tenets of ecotourism, CREST promotes greater acknowledgement of and compensation for the negative effects of (long-distance) travel.
To undertstand tour operators' knowledge of sustainable travel and carbon offset programs, Dr. Wolfgang Strasdas, a visiting professor from the University of Eberswalde in Germany, conducted research involving suvey questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups. To read more about his research on sustainable travel, please download the article, "Voluntary Offsetting of Flight Emissions: An Effective Way to Mitigate the Environmental Impacts of Long-haul Tourism?" (MS Word format).
