Projects > Community-Based Ecotourism Projects

A study of existing projects by indigenous and local populations around the world who have established their own "tourism for conservation" facilities and programs.

Over the last 15-odd years, rural communities in many parts of Latin America, Africa, and Asia have undertaken a variety of ecotourism projects designed to generate income and protect natural areas and wildlife. Some of these projects involve partnerships with the private sector, others with NGOs, and still others with government. Based on Stanford's in-depth, multi-year analysis of three community-based eco-lodges in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia and a set of questions and criteria arising from this work, a wider study should be undertaken to analyze and compare similar projects in Central America, Africa, and Asia.

This project will involve field work by students and faculty at a select number of other countries.
