Travelers’ Philanthropy: A Growing Trend in Development Assistance Philanthropy New York Members Briefing, June 16, 2008

At a breakfast briefing for foundations that belong to Philanthropy New York , media, and NGOs, CREST’s Co-Directors Martha Honey and Bill Durham joined Sven Lindblad, President and CEO of Lindblad Expeditions; Nik Charov, Deputy Development Officer of New York Restoration Project; and Kevin Doyle, News  Editor of Conde Nast Traveler  to discuss various aspects of travelers’ philanthropy. The panel was chaired by Michael Seltzer, a foundation and NGO advisor who, a decade ago, first coined the term “travelers’ philanthropy”.

Over 50 people attended,  which is a great turnout for a Philanthropy Members Briefing! Here’s what some of our fellow panelists had to say:

“There is a tremendous opportunity for travel providers to make a difference in the communities in which they operate.  By operating travel philanthropy programs which engage tourists in learning and caring about a place, we can as an industry work together to promote the conservation and preservation of our planet’s beautiful and pristine destinations.  I am so pleased that CREST has taken a lead gathering industry leaders and interested parties to disseminate information about Travel Philanthropy and I am happy to report their most recent event was a tremendous success.”
--Sven Lindblad, President and CEO, Lindblad Expeditions

“It was an honor and a pleasure to be part of CREST’s recent New York City colloquia. Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project (NYRP) has, apparently, been engaged in travelers’ philanthropy since 2001 at our New Leaf Restaurant in Fort Tryon and through our corporate volunteer outings. We’ve been inviting ‘travelers’ (diners and volunteers) to visit far-flung destinations across the five boroughs – ‘foreign countries’  like Washington Heights, Bed-Stuy, and Jamaica (Queens). There, they’ve contributed time, talent, and treasure, helping NYRP continue to make New York City a cleaner, greener, better place to live. We look forward to working with CREST, our volunteers, our corporate partners, and our patrons to continue expanding travelers’ philanthropy here in the greatest city in the world.”
--Nik Charov, Deputy Development Officer, New York Restoration Project
